She was tempted to refuse his help, to assure him that she could do it alone, to urge him to go back to bed, but she didn't. Instead, she gave him a grateful little nod and moved over a little, continuing to scrub the floor.
"I didn't mean to wake you up," she told him after a moment of silence.
